Financial Literacy Showcase
In 2015, St Columban's was part of a research project related to Financial Literacy Learning in conjunction with Dr Catherine Attard and the University of Western Sydney. All classes were involved in the project. The children decided on a class project related to money and teachers wrote units of work on these themes. The units were taught in classrooms and culminated in a Showcase presentation for parents and the community. Kindergarten made and sold lolly bags and used the proceeds to purchase a hermit crab for their class pet. Year 1 participated in lessons around a classroom economy and could purchase rewards with 'money' they earned. Year 2 held a jellybean guessing competition. Year 3 designed and made their own "Mayfield Monopoly" games. Year 4 were given a 'budget' and had to design and furnish their ideal bedroom. Year 5 held a stall selling icy cups. Year 6 held a sausage sizzle and used the proceeds for their end of year activity. All the children learned new skills in researching, marketing, earning money and selling a product. These units will be repeated in 2016.
